We hear the world through German ears.
This film will be constructed organically on at least two very different layers. One is a daisy-chain of stories that apparently have little to do with one another; another is the deeper research emerging from years of working with reality in an associative, documentary film. It is an ode to the magic contained in the tension between two points, two notes, two people or more, who bring the emotion to a film.
In practice sound is the way into everything I do with film. For years, I have been discovering the power inside organic sound, the impact of microphones on how people learn, feel, hear, share and think, and how this can challenge story-telling conventions but still connect easily with a non-specialist audience.
The film will be shot in several locations.
This work dovetails with research around how archive - sonic, and other forms - is selected and stored. And how new ideas about what valuable archive can be, break open all sorts of ways of including what has been undervalued or simply unseen in the past.
